The Most Installed, Most Misconfigured Plugin in WordPress

Yoast SEO sits on millions of WordPress sites, and on most of them it is doing a fraction of its job. Installed, activated, and never actually configured, it becomes a row of colored dots people glance at while the settings that matter sit on defaults. Set up correctly, it is a genuinely useful instrument: it manages how your pages present themselves to search engines and keeps the technical plumbing clean. Here is the correct setup, in the order we do it for clients.

Start With the Configuration Wizard, Honestly

Yoast's first-run configuration walks through the essentials: whether your site represents an organization or a person, your name and logo for the structured data it emits, and which content types belong in search results. Answer these accurately rather than clicking through, because they feed the schema markup search engines read about your business. Two minutes of honesty here beats an hour of cleanup later.

Search Appearance: Where Titles Are Won

The Search Appearance settings control the default shape of every title tag and meta description on the site. Set the separator, decide whether the site name trails every title, and write real defaults for each content type. Then, and this is the part most owners skip, override those defaults on your important pages individually. The homepage, service pages, and cornerstone posts each deserve a hand-written title that earns the click, following the principles in our SEO best practices guide.

Sitemaps and the Plumbing

Yoast generates an XML sitemap automatically, and your job is to curate it: content types worth ranking go in, utility pages stay out, and the sitemap URL gets submitted to Google Search Console. Whether blog posts belong in yours is a real question with a real answer, which we cover in should you put blog posts in your sitemap. While you are in the plumbing, let Yoast strip the category-base clutter and set canonical URLs so duplicate paths do not compete with themselves.

Using the Dots Without Worshiping Them

The famous traffic lights grade two things per post: how thoroughly you used a focus keyphrase, and readability. Both are useful checklists and neither is a ranking guarantee, because Google does not award points for green dots. Choose the keyphrase with actual research, the kind described in keywords are key to ranking, write for the human reading the page, and treat orange dots as suggestions rather than sins. A page that reads naturally and answers the search will beat a mechanically green one.

Free Covers Most. Discipline Covers the Rest.

Yoast's free tier handles everything above. Premium adds multiple keyphrases, internal linking suggestions, and redirect management, and the redirect manager alone can justify it on sites that restructure often. But no tier substitutes for the discipline of good titles, real research, and content worth ranking. The plugin is the instrument panel, not the engine.

If your Yoast has been sitting on defaults since the day it was installed, have us tune it. It is one of the fastest low-cost wins in our SEO work, and the difference shows up in the search results within weeks.
