Google's Three-Number Answer to "Is This Site Annoying?"

Core Web Vitals are Google's attempt to measure, with three numbers, the experience every visitor recognizes instantly: does the page show up quickly, respond when touched, and hold still while it loads? They are collected from real Chrome users visiting your actual site, they influence rankings, and unlike most SEO concepts they describe something your customers physically feel. Here is the primer, in plain language.

The Three Metrics

  • LCP, Largest Contentful Paint: does it show up? Time until the page's main content, usually the hero image or headline, is visible. Good is under 2.5 seconds. The usual villains: oversized images, slow servers, and render-blocking code.
  • INP, Interaction to Next Paint: does it respond? How quickly the page reacts when someone taps, clicks, or types, measured across the whole visit. Good is under 200 milliseconds. The usual villains: heavy JavaScript and third-party scripts hogging the browser's attention.
  • CLS, Cumulative Layout Shift: does it hold still? How much content jumps around during loading, the effect behind every misclicked button when an ad loaded late. Good is under 0.1. The usual villains: images without reserved dimensions and late-injected banners.

Lab Numbers vs. Field Numbers

Every testing tool reports one of two kinds of data, and confusing them causes most CWV arguments. Lab data is a simulated visit: useful for diagnosis, run on demand in the tools from our measurement toolkit. Field data is what real visitors experienced over the past month, and it is what Google actually grades. Check field data in PageSpeed Insights and in Search Console's Core Web Vitals report, which shows which page groups pass and fail across your site. Diagnose in the lab; get judged in the field.

How Much It Matters for Rankings, Honestly

Core Web Vitals are a real ranking signal and not a dominant one: content relevance still wins the war. The honest framing is that vitals are a tiebreaker among comparable pages and a conversion factor everywhere, because the visitor who waited four seconds is a visitor half-gone regardless of rankings. Passing vitals pays twice, which is why it belongs in the budget conversation we wrote for marketing teams.

The Fix List, Ranked by Frequency

What actually moves the numbers on the sites we repair, in order: compress and properly size images, reserve dimensions for every image and embed, cut or delay third-party scripts, add real caching and delivery, the CDN and object cache layer, and replace bloated themes whose weight no optimization can rescue. Most failing sites need three of the five, and the first two are often a weekend's work.

If your Search Console shows red and orange where green should be, send us the report. We will tell you which fixes are the weekend kind and which are the structural kind, before you pay for either. Both are standard work for our maintenance team.
