An Honest Comparison From a Team That Has Migrated Both Ways

Kentico and WordPress can both run a serious website, and anyone who tells you the choice is obvious in every case is selling something. We have built on both and we have migrated clients from Kentico to WordPress often enough to have a clear opinion. For most businesses, WordPress comes out on top, and it is worth being specific about why, and about when it does not.

What Kentico Gets Right

Credit first. Kentico is a commercial .NET content management system with genuinely enterprise-grade features in the box: structured content, workflows, permissions, and marketing tooling that large organizations pay serious license fees to get. In a company standardized on Microsoft technology, with .NET developers on staff and a budget that does not blink at licensing, Kentico is a defensible, even comfortable, choice.

Where WordPress Wins for Most Businesses

  • Total cost. WordPress is open source. No license fees, and hosting that fits any budget. Kentico's licensing alone can exceed a small business's entire annual web budget.
  • The talent pool. WordPress powers over 40 percent of the web. Every market, including Atlanta, is full of developers who know it deeply. Kentico expertise is scarce and priced like it. Whoever builds your site, someone else can always maintain it.
  • The ecosystem. Tens of thousands of plugins and integrations mean most business needs are a mature, tested add-on rather than a custom build. Reviews, events, e-commerce, memberships, forms: solved problems.
  • Editorial ease. Non-technical staff learn the WordPress editor in an afternoon. Content teams simply move faster on it, and a CMS your team avoids using is an expensive way to have a stale website.
  • SEO tooling. WordPress's SEO ecosystem is unmatched, and paired with the fundamentals, it gives search engines exactly the clean structure they want.

The Caveats That Keep Us Honest

WordPress's popularity makes it a target, so it must be hardened and kept current, which is why we treat WordPress security and ongoing maintenance as part of the platform, not extras. And a WordPress site assembled from a bloated theme plus thirty plugins will be slow and fragile. The platform rewards restraint and craft. Ours are hand-built: lean themes, few plugins, real code.

Our Verdict

Choose Kentico if you are a .NET organization with the staff and budget to feed it. Choose WordPress for nearly everything else: lower cost, deeper talent, faster editing, and an ecosystem that keeps pace with the web. Either way, the platform matters less than the build quality, which is the part we control completely.
