Who Are You Actually Building For?

Ask a business who their website is for and the honest first answer is usually "everyone." Personas exist to break that habit. A persona is a fictional but specific person who stands in for a real segment of your audience: a name, a situation, a goal, and the doubts they carry when they land on your site. "Everyone" gives a design team nothing to decide with. "Maria, a Cobb County office manager comparing three vendors during her lunch break, on her phone" decides arguments instantly.

What a Useful Persona Contains

Skip the stock-photo poster with hobbies and a favorite color. A working persona fits on an index card:

  • Situation: who they are and what triggered the visit. What just happened that sent them looking?
  • Goal: the thing they need to accomplish on your site, in their words, not your org chart's.
  • Doubts: what would make them hesitate or leave. Price fears, trust gaps, confusion about fit.
  • Context: device, urgency, and how they found you. A referral on a desktop reads differently than a panic search on a phone.

Two to four personas cover most businesses. More than that and you are back to designing for everyone.

Putting Personas to Work in WordPress

Personas earn their keep when they start making decisions inside the CMS:

  • Pages map to personas. Each major persona deserves a landing path that speaks to their situation, rather than one homepage trying to greet everyone at once.
  • Navigation follows their questions. Menu labels come from the persona's vocabulary. If Maria thinks "pricing," the menu should not say "engagement models."
  • Content answers doubts on purpose. Testimonials, FAQs, and case studies get chosen to dissolve a specific persona's specific hesitation, which is also exactly the content that wins the searches they type, tying directly into SEO best practices.
  • Categories and tags stay coherent. Organizing blog content around persona questions keeps the site's structure meaningful instead of archival.

Test the Fiction Against Reality

Personas are hypotheses, and WordPress makes them testable. Watch how each persona's landing pages perform, run A/B tests on the messages you wrote for them, and read heat maps to see whether real visitors move the way your fictional ones were supposed to. When reality disagrees with the persona, reality wins and the card gets rewritten.

Design for Someone, Convert More of Everyone

The paradox of personas is that narrowing the audience widens the results: pages written for a specific person convert strangers better than pages written for a crowd. It is a foundational move in our UX and design work and our digital marketing engagements alike. If your website is still greeting "everyone," let us help you meet your Marias. They have been bouncing off the homepage for years.
