A Core Update Is Coming. Here Is How to Stand Still Correctly.
Google has signaled that its next core update is imminent, expected to begin rolling out within days, and the SEO world is doing what it always does: bracing, speculating, and selling recovery packages in advance. Our advice to clients is calmer, because we have watched these cycles for two decades. Core updates reshuffle rankings by re-weighing quality signals across the whole web. If your site's quality is real, updates are usually weather. If it is borrowed, no trick survives them for long.
The Context That Makes This One Interesting
This update arrives with unusual backstory. The March 2024 core update was one of the largest in years, folding the helpful content system into the core algorithm, and it hit hard: a wave of thin, mass-produced, made-for-Google content lost visibility, but so did a number of small sites with genuinely useful content, and their owners said so loudly. Google acknowledged the feedback and has publicly said upcoming updates would do better at surfacing helpful content from smaller independent sites. This August rollout is widely expected to be that promise's first test.
What to Do While It Rolls Out
- Do not panic-change anything mid-rollout. Core updates take weeks to complete, rankings swing during the process, and reacting to day-three data is how sites break themselves. Judge positions after the dust settles.
- Watch Search Console, not your feelings. Compare query-level performance before and after, and separate real losses from seasonal drift.
- If you drop, diagnose honestly. Google's own guidance for core updates has not changed: there is nothing to "fix" in the penalty sense. The question is whether your content is the best answer for the queries you want, judged the way we described in how the Google algorithm thinks.
- If you gain, understand why. Gains tell you which of your content Google now trusts more. Feed that signal: expand what worked.
The Boring Strategy That Keeps Winning
Every core update since Panda has pointed the same direction: real expertise, first-hand experience, content made for readers rather than crawlers, on sites that are fast, clean, and trustworthy. That is not a coincidence. It is the entire trajectory. Sites built on the fundamentals spend update weeks mildly curious. Sites built on loopholes spend them refreshing rank trackers.
If You Would Rather Not Watch This Alone
We monitor rollouts like this for our digital marketing clients: baselines before, measurements after, and honest analysis of what moved and why, without the recovery-package theater. If the update lands on your site in either direction and you want a clear-eyed read, get in touch. The best time to have a baseline was last month. The second best is today.
