The Tools Arrived Fast. The Judgment Has to Catch Up.
In the last few months, AI went from conference-talk material to something sitting in every web professional's browser tab. ChatGPT drafts copy in seconds. Midjourney and DALL-E produce imagery from a sentence. GitHub Copilot suggests code as developers type. The question we hear from clients now is not whether these tools matter, but what to actually do with them, and what to keep away from them. Having spent months working them into our own practice, here is our field report.
Where AI Already Earns Its Seat in Web Design
- First drafts, not final drafts. AI writing tools produce serviceable starting copy for pages and posts. The output is generic by nature, because it is built from averages, so the value is speed to a draft a human then makes specific and true.
- Concept imagery and mood boards. Generating ten visual directions in an afternoon used to be a week of sourcing. AI image tools compress exploration, even when the final art is made properly.
- Code assistance. Copilot-style tools genuinely accelerate boilerplate and unfamiliar syntax. Every suggestion still gets read, because the confident-but-wrong suggestion is real and regular.
- Research and summarization. Competitive scans, content outlines, and long-document summaries are honest AI wins today.
Where We Keep Human Hands on the Wheel
Some parts of the work fail quietly when automated, which is the worst way to fail. Strategy and positioning, because AI describes the average of an industry and your edge is precisely what is not average. Accessibility, because generated markup routinely misses the structure that assistive technology depends on. Anything factual about your business, because these tools state wrong things with perfect confidence. And final design judgment, because taste is still the moat. AI in Project Management
The quieter revolution is administrative. Meeting notes summarize themselves. Status updates draft from ticket activity. Requirements documents get a structured first pass in minutes. None of this replaces the actual discipline of running projects, the short cycles and honest reviews we described in Scrum and agile, but it strips hours of clerical drag from every sprint, and small teams feel that immediately.

Used lazily, it mass-produces the same generic website the templates were already selling.
