When Accessibility Is Not Optional
For a public university, digital accessibility is not a nice-to-have or a lawsuit hedge. The Scale Problem Universities Face
A university produces documents the way a river produces water: course materials, forms, reports, guides, syllabi, archives going back years. Almost all of it ends up as PDFs, and almost none of those PDFs were born accessible. Scanned pages with no real text underneath. Forms that cannot be completed without a mouse. Tables that read as word salad to a screen reader. Multiply by thousands of files and the problem stops being technical and becomes logistical: how does an institution work through a mountain like that without burying its own staff?

- Triage first. Not every document deserves equal urgency. Current, student-facing, and high-traffic materials lead the queue.
- Real remediation, not checkbox passes. Proper heading structure, tagged reading order, descriptive alt text, labeled form fields, and tables that make sense aloud.
- Testing with actual assistive technology, because an automated checker can bless a document a human still cannot use.
- Documentation of conformance, the GPAT and VPAT paperwork institutions need to demonstrate compliance.
