The Client

The Kanada Team came to Web Experts with an unusually ambitious idea: create an online radio platform without fixed playlists and without storing music on its own servers.

Instead, the music would come from real people sharing songs on Bluesky. As the community posted new tracks, Kanada Radio would identify them, organize them, and use them to build continuously changing stations.

This was not simply a request for a website. It was a request for an engine capable of turning a live social network into a functioning radio platform.

Turning a Social Feed Into a Music Catalog

A social network produces an enormous, unpredictable stream of posts, and only a small portion of those posts contain playable music.

Kanada Radio continuously monitors that stream, identifies posts containing music, verifies that each link works, and catalogs every track by song title, artist, and the person who shared it.

That process also has to work in reverse. When a listener selects a station or performs a search, the platform must quickly query thousands of constantly changing records and return a sequence of tracks that plays naturally.

Kanada Radio is ultimately a sophisticated database presented as a radio station. The quality of the sorting determines the quality of the listening experience. If the system gets it wrong, stations repeat tracks, encounter broken links, or run out of music. When it works correctly, the listener simply presses play.

Building the Continuous Player

The player introduced another significant engineering challenge. Music could not be stored on Kanada Radio’s servers, playback needed to continue smoothly between tracks, stations had to change as the live catalog changed, and playback needed to survive ordinary page navigation.

Because every track is hosted elsewhere, the player operates as a coordination layer between the listener, the database, and multiple external music sources.

It queues media the platform does not control, detects unavailable tracks, moves to the next playable result, and reports failures to the database. Links are checked before reaching listeners, and tracks that repeatedly fail can be retired automatically. The result is a system that actively improves the catalog while people listen.

Live Data Requires Long-Lived Connections

Most websites receive a request, return a page, and end the connection. Kanada Radio must remain connected.

The ingestion system maintains long-running connections to Bluesky so it can discover new music throughout the day. It must handle rate limits, interruptions, reconnections, and the volume of a constantly moving global feed.

The listening experience also needs to remain dependable during sessions that may last for hours. Building reliable connections on both sides of the platform—the incoming social stream and the outgoing listening experience—required some of the project’s most careful engineering.

Signing In Without Collecting Passwords

The Kanada Team wanted listeners to use an identity they already had rather than create another account and password.

We integrated authentication through Bluesky’s authorization system. Kanada Radio never receives or stores the listener’s Bluesky password.

Signed-in listeners can save stations, create playlists from live searches, review their listening activity, and share discoveries back to Bluesky. Visitors who do not sign in can still explore the platform and play music. Authentication adds useful personalization without creating a barrier between the listener and the music.

Search Results That Stay Alive

Traditional playlists are static. Kanada Radio playlists can evolve.

Listeners can search the complete catalog by song, artist, or community member. A search can then be saved as a living playlist that continues to reflect the available catalog.

This means a playlist based on an artist, genre, or contributor can gain new music as additional tracks enter the system. The database is not simply storing past activity—it continually reshapes the listening experience.

Charts Built From Real Listener Activity

Kanada Radio also turns platform activity into public music charts. Most Played charts show what listeners are actually hearing, while Most Shared charts reflect the music gaining attention across the community.

These charts are generated from live platform data and can be shared through coordinated social graphics. They give listeners another way to discover music while showing how the catalog changes over time.

The listener sees a clean interface, selects a station, and presses play. Underneath that simple interaction, a custom database is doing the work of an entire radio staff: discovering music, checking links, organizing the catalog, building stations, and responding to listening activity in real time.
